Speedway takes its name from the English word meaning “highway,” “high-speed road. In Russian it is also used the name “track disciplines”.
The track for speedway has an elliptical shape and necessarily contains two straight sections and two left turns. The total length of the track is 260-400 m. It does not contain artificial or special obstacles and turns.
The track surface may have different coatings, according to which are allocated types of speedway:
- rug,
- dirt,
- grass,
- ice.
A separate subtype is grospeedway – motorcycle racing on a long track. Key differences from the classic competitions – a longer track (about 1000 m), higher speeds, 6 riders participating simultaneously instead of 4 and small changes in the design of the motorcycle.
